Caregiver burden in caregivers of patients receiving home health care services applying to emergency department of a city hospital: a cross-sectional study
(Malatya Turgut Özal Üniversitesi, 2024) Ertek, Engin; Akan, Mustafa
Background: Patients receiving home health care services need caregivers who will undertake their care at home in order to meet their needs. In this process, caregivers experience some problems related to their own functionality and face care burden. Although caregiving is associated with physical and psychological distress in studies in the literature, this situation can also be perceived as a reward by the caregiver with the development of positive emotions. In this study, it was aimed to investigate caregiver burden and related factors in caregivers of patients receiving home health care services who applied to the emergency department of a city hospital. The hypothesis of the study is that caregiver burden will be lower in caregivers who provide wound care support (WCS) compared to those who do not. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the emergency clinic of a city hospital between 04.04.2024 and 04.08.2024. The study included caregivers of patients who received home health care services and applied to the emergency department, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden (ZCB) scale and sociodemographic data form were applied to the participants. Results: In the study of 120 participants, the mean age of the participants was found to be 44.6±12.3 years and the total score of the ZCB scale was 42.5 (19-77). When analysed in terms of WCS, it was observed that 92 (76.7%) of the caregivers provided WCS. When the caregivers were divided into two groups as providing WCS and not providing WCS, it was found that the group providing WCS had a statistically significantly lower total score on the ZCB scale than the group not providing WCS (p

Investigation of the Relationship between Headache and Anxiety during the Late COVID-19 Pandemic Period: A Prospective Case-Control Study
(2022) Adıgüzel, Ahmet; Akan, Mustafa; Çıplak, Sibel
Objective: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on both the physical and psychological well-being of individuals have not yet been clearly understood. Especially during the early period of the pandemic, the most prevalent psychological effects included fear, preoccupation with health, anxiety, and feeling of loneliness caused by a general sense of uncertainty. The incidence of headache was as high as 70% among the mild COVID-19 cases. Findings from the past coronavirus outbreaks indicated that neuropsychiatric symptoms might cause a significant health burden and adversely affect the patients’ quality of life. The present study aimed to investigate the anxiety-related clinical conditions of the patients diagnosed with primary headache, who presented to the neurology polyclinic during the prolonged pandemic period. Methods: The research was designed as a two-center, prospective case-control study. Patients diagnosed with primary headache, who presented to the neurology outpatient clinic, and healthy volunteers without a primary headache diagnosis were included in the study. Data collection tools included the sociodemographic data form, Headache Impact Test, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale Short Form, and COVID-19 Disease Perception Scale. Results: Data collected from a total of 869 participants, including 408 (47%) patients diagnosed with headache and 461 (53%) healthy volunteers, were investigated. The results of the Headache Impact Test-6 suggested a severe effect on quality of life in 187 participants (45.8%) in the headache group and 73 participants (15.8%) in the Control Group (p=0.001). There was coronavirus anxiety in 59 (14.5%) participants with headache and 8 (1.7%) participants in the Control Group (p=0.001). Furthermore, the rate of coronavirus anxiety in participants that had and did not have COVID-19 was 44 (13.7%) and 22 (4.1%), respectively (p=0.001). Conclusion: The study results revealed that patients with headache and COVID-19 presented with a higher rate of coronavirus anxiety than healthy controls and those not diagnosed with COVID-19. Further studies on larger samples are necessary for investigating the long term neuropsychiatric effects of COVID-19 in individuals.

Parkinsonism and progressive atypical psychiatric symptoms in the post-stroke subacute period
(Malatya Turgut Özal Üniversitesi, 2022) Çıplak, Sibel; Akan, Mustafa; Aba, Melike
Stroke has a significant impact on the psychological and physical health of patients. Approximately 1%–4% of patients, movement disorders develop in the early post-stroke period. While chorea appears within hours of a stroke, post-stroke dystonia and tremor may develop after several months. Depression is generally observed in the post-stroke period; however, reports of atypical psychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis, in the early subacute-stroke period are rare. Herein, we demonstrate the case of a patient in whom parkinsonism symptoms and atypical psychiatric findings were found, which progressed to 3 and 2 weeks, respectively, after ischemic stroke.

(2024) Akan, Mustafa; Uğur, Kerim; AYAZ, Nusret
Objective: Substance abuse and addiction are reported to be approximately 2 times more common in individuals diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) compared to the general population. Adults with ADHD have been stated to have difficulties in emotion regulation as well as core symptoms of the disease. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate individuals who applied to a university hospital psychiatry clinic probation clinic in terms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and emotion regulation difficulties. The hypothesis of the study is that individuals who apply to the outpatient clinic will have higher ADHD symptoms and emotion regulation difficulties than healthy controls. Method: The research was conducted between 18.06.22-30.10.22. 135 male patients diagnosed with substance use disorder and 141 healthy volunteers without any psychiatric disease were included in the study. Adult ADHD selfreport scale (ASRS), Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale Short Form (DERS-16), and sociodemographic data form were administered to the participants. Results: The probation group's ASRS total score, attention deficit and hyperactivity/impulsivity subscale scores were found to be statistically significantly higher than the control group (p=0.004, p=0.005, p=0.007, respectively). Also DERS-16 impulse and nonacceptance subscale scores of the probation group were statistically significantly higher than the control group (p=0.001, p=0.015, respectively). Discussion: ADHD and accompanying emotion regulation difficulties may increase the risk of substance use in adults. Considering these clinical features in individuals applying to the probation outpatient clinic may make therapeutic interventions more effective.
