Öğe Advanced convolutional neural network modeling for fuel cell system optimization and efficiency in methane, methanol, and diesel reforming(Peerj Inc, 2024) Yalcin, Sercan; Yildirim, Muhammed; Alatas, BilalFuel cell systems (FCSs) have been widely used for niche applications in the market. Furthermore, the research community has worked on using FCSs for different sectors, such as transportation, stationary power generation, marine and maritime, aerospace, military and defense, telecommunications, and material handling. The reformation of various fuels, such as methanol, methane, and diesel can be utilized to generate hydrogen for FCSs. This study introduces an advanced convolutional neural network (CNN) model designed to accurately forecast hydrogen yield and carbon monoxide volume percentages during the reformation processes of methane, methanol, and diesel. Moreover, the CNN model has been tailored to accurately estimate methane conversion rates in methane reforming processes. The proposed CNN models are created by combining the 3D-CNN and 2D-CNN models. The Keras Tuner approach in Python is employed in this study to find the ideal values for different hyperparameters such as batch size, learning rate, time steps, and optimization method selection. The accuracy of the proposed CNN model is evaluated by using the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R2. The results indicate that the proposed CNN model is better than other artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and standard CNN for performance estimation of reforming processes of methane, diesel, and methanol. The results also show that the suggested CNN model can be used to accurately estimate critical output parameters for reforming various fuels. The proposed method performs better in CO prediction than the support vector machine (SVM), with an R2 of 0.9989 against 0.9827. This novel methodology not only improves performance estimation for reforming processes but also provides a valuable tool for accurately estimating output parameters across various fuel types.Öğe Automated Classification of Brain Tumor Disease with a Novel CNN Relief and SVM-Based Deep Hybrid Model(Int Information & Engineering Technology Assoc, 2023) Bayram, Hande Yuksel; Bingol, Harun; Alatas, BilalThe brain tumor is a very dangerous type of cancer that can be seen in people of almost any age and usually results in the patient's death. Early detection of these tumors, which have many varieties, is extremely important in terms of the patient's survival, affecting the planning of treatment, just as with other types of cancer. Early diagnosis of the disease is usually performed by means of imaging devices. It takes a lot of expertise to analyze the MRI images and diagnose the brain tumor. In this study, a hybrid deep model is recommended that can be used effectively in the classification of the brain tumor. The proposed hybrid model is a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based method that automatically classifies Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of three different types of brain tumors, Glioma, Meningioma and Pituitary successfully. Our model is basically going through these stages. First of all, the features from the two models that show the highest performance from pre-trained deep models are combined. The most effective features of the specification map obtained in the next phase were selected using the Relief method. At the last stage, classification was carried out with Support Vector Machine (SVM), one of the most known machine learning techniques. As a result of the experiments, the hybrid deep model we proposed obtained 93.2% accuracy. It seems that proposed hybrid method has very competitive results and is thought to be efficiently used to classify the brain tumor.Öğe Automatic classification of kidney CT images with relief based novel hybrid deep model(Peerj Inc, 2023) Bingol, Harun; Yildirim, Muhammed; Yildirim, Kadir; Alatas, BilalOne of the most crucial organs in the human body is the kidney. Usually, the patient does not realize the serious problems that arise in the kidneys in the early stages of the disease. Many kidney diseases can be detected and diagnosed by specialists with the help of routine computer tomography (CT) images. Early detection of kidney diseases is extremely important for the success of the treatment of the disease and for the prevention of other serious diseases. In this study, CT images of kidneys containing stones, tumors, and cysts were classified using the proposed hybrid model. Results were also obtained using pre-trained models that had been acknowledged in the literature to evaluate the effectiveness of the suggested model. The proposed model consists of 29 layers. While classifying kidney CT images, feature maps were obtained from the convolution 6 and convolution 7 layers of the proposed model, and these feature maps were combined after optimizing with the Relief method. The wide neural network classifier then classifies the optimized feature map. While the highest accuracy value obtained in eight different pre-trained models was 87.75%, this accuracy value was 99.37% in the proposed model. In addition, different performance evaluation metrics were used to measure the performance of the model. These values show that the proposed model has reached high-performance values. Therefore, the proposed approach seems promising in order to automatically and effectively classify kidney CT images.Öğe Chaos enhanced intelligent optimization-based novel deception detection system(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Bingol, Harun; Alatas, BilalToday, with the developing technology, access methods to information have also changed. Internet blogs and news sites, social media, etc. replace the traditional information access tools such as TV, radio, newspaper, and magazines. Cheaper and faster access than traditional methods and easy access from anywhere where the internet is available are the main factors in changing the access method to information. Besides, information spreads rapidly on the internet without proving the accuracy. There may be many reasons for the distribution of misinformation in this way, such as commercial, political, and economic. Information with fake content and deception purposes negatively affects both the person and the society. It is extremely important to detect deceptive information in textual data and researchers continue to propose new models in order to obtain efficient results in terms of many metrics. This paper proposes a new approach for deception detection problems. The deception detection problem was considered an optimization problem for the first time. Optics Inspired Opti-mization (OIO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), and Chaos Based Optics Inspired Optimization (CBOIOs) are adapted and modeled for the first time in the deception detection problem. Deception detection models proposed in this article include data preprocessing, adapting optimization methods, and testing stages. An experimental evaluation and comparison of the proposed model and seven supervised machine learning algorithms are per-formed within two different data sets depending on four evaluation metrics (Accuracy, Recall, Precision, and F -Measure). Results show that CBOIOs are more effective than OIO, GWO, and other machine learning algorithms for this problem.Öğe Chaos-Embedded Multi-Objective Intelligent Optimization-Based Explainable Classification Model for Determining Cherry Fruit Fly Infestation Levels Using Pomological Data(Mdpi, 2026) Yildirim, Suna; Ozgen, Inanc; Alatas, Bilal; Yildirim, HakanThe European cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi L.) poses a significant pest threat to cherry production due to its rapid reproduction and host specificity, causing substantial economic damage. This study presents a novel, explainable, and biologically inspired data-driven classification model based on fruit characteristics to support targeted and sustainable pest control strategies. In research conducted at four different locations in Elaz & imath;& gbreve; province, three population classes were determined based on the number of adult individuals caught in traps, and 10 different fruit characteristics were measured in fruit samples belonging to each class. The data used in this study are original data obtained by the authors. To examine the relationship between pomological characteristics of cherry fruit and cherry fruit fly density, the Chaotic Rule-based-Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm2 (CRb-SPEA2) method, developed as a multi-objective and chaos-integrated evolutionary rule mining framework, was adapted. The developed algorithm aimed for high performance, interpretability, and transparency. Accuracy, Precision, and Recall metrics, which are conflicting objectives, were optimized with Pareto-optimal solutions, yielding selectable results for domain experts. To increase population diversity and reduce the risk of early convergence and getting stuck in a local optimum, the Tent chaotic mapping mechanism was also integrated into the system. Furthermore, the model was trained without the need for predefined automatic discretization of the continuous value ranges of the attributes. The proposed model achieved superior results across all classes, with the highest accuracy rate of 82.6% recorded in the High class, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and recall values.Öğe Chaos-Enhanced, Optimization-Based Interpretable Classification Model and Performance Evaluation in Food Drying(Mdpi, 2026) Kaymak, Cagri; Alatas, Bilal; Yildirim, Suna; Akpinar, Ebru; Katircioglu, Gizem Gul; Catalkaya, Murat; Das, MehmetFood drying is a widely used preservation technique; however, achieving high energy efficiency while maintaining product quality remains a significant challenge. This study aims to analyze comprehensive experimental data obtained during the hot-air drying process of the Pa & scedil;a pear (regional pear) and the system's autonomous control structure using an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based method. The intelligent drying system, operating for approximately 17.5 h under two temperatures (50 degrees C and 65 degrees C) and two air speeds (0.63 m/s and 1.03 m/s), continuously adjusted the temperature and air speed using a PLC-based control mechanism; it ensured stable control throughout the process by monitoring parameters such as product weight, moisture, inlet-outlet temperatures, and air speed in real time. Experimental results showed that drying performance varied significantly with operating conditions, with product mass decreasing from 450 g to 103 g. The innovative aspect of the study is that it obtained quantitative, interpretable rules without discretization by applying the oscillatory chaotic sunflower optimization algorithm (OCSFO) to multidimensional control and process data for the first time. Thanks to its chaotic search mechanism, OCSFO accurately analyzed complex drying dynamics and created rules that achieved over 90% success for high, medium, and low performance classes. The obtained explainable rules clearly demonstrate that drying temperature and air velocity are the dominant determining parameters for drying efficiency, while energy consumption and cabin temperature distribution play a supporting role in distinguishing between efficiency classes. These rules clearly demonstrate how changes in controlled temperature and air velocity, combined with product weight and heat transfer, affect drying performance. Thus, the study offers a robust framework that identifies critical factors affecting drying performance through a transparent artificial intelligence approach that leverages both the autonomous control system and XAI-based rule mining.Öğe Enhancing knee osteoarthritis detection with AI, image denoising, and optimized classification methods and the importance of physical therapy methods(Peerj Inc, 2025) Bugday, Burak; Bingol, Harun; Yildirim, Muhammed; Alatas, BilalOsteoarthritis (OA) is considered one of the most challenging arthritic disorders due to its high disease burden and lack of effective treatment options that can change the course of the disease. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) reduces people's quality of life and shortens their daily activities. Therefore, early detection of KOA dramatically impacts patients' quality of life. This study developed an artificial intelligence-supported system to detect KOA. In the developed system, firstly, the images in the original dataset were denoised with a Gaussian filter. Then, feature maps were extracted from both the original and Gaussian applied datasets with the DenseNet201 selected from eight different pre-trained models, and these two feature maps were concatenated. In this way, it is aimed to bring together different features of the same image. Then, feature selection was made using the neighborhood component analysis (NCA) method for the developed system to produce more successful results, and the optimized feature map was classified into six different classifiers. As a result, a high accuracy rate of 85% was achieved in the proposed model. This value is promising for the automatic diagnosis of KOA with computer-aided systems. As a result, a high accuracy rate of 85% was achieved in the developed system of the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The proposed model was more successful than the other models used in the study.Öğe Hybrid Deep Model for Automated Detection of Tomato Leaf Diseases(Int Information & Engineering Technology Assoc, 2022) Bayram, Hande Yuksel; Bingol, Harun; Alatas, BilalTomatoes are preferred by farmers because of their high productivity. This fruit has a fibrous structure and contains plenty of vitamins. Tomato diseases are generally observed on stem, fruit, and leaves. Early diagnosis of the disease in plants is of vital importance for the plant. This is very important for farmers who expect economic gain from that plant. Because if the disease is not treated early, these tomatoes should be destroyed. For these reasons, systems to diagnose the disease early are very important. In this study, a tomato leaf diseases classification model developed with deep learning methods, which is one of the most popular artificial intelligence techniques, is proposed in order to eliminate the possibility of the human eye being mistaken. In this study, 6 different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures were used. In the second stage, feature maps of tomato leaf images in the dataset were obtained using the six pre-trained deep learning architectures. In the hybrid model proposed in this study, the feature maps extracted using the best two of the six deep learning models are concatenated. Then, the Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) method was applied to the extracted features in order to speed up the system, unnecessary features were removed and optimized. The optimized feature map is classified by traditional intelligent classification models. As a result of experimental studies, the average accuracy rate of the proposed model is 99.50 percent.Öğe Machine Learning Based Deception Detection System in Online Social Networks(2022) Bingöl, Harun; Alatas, BilalThe rapid dissemination of Internet technologies makes it easier for people to live in terms of access to information. However, in addition to these positive aspects of the internet, negative effects cannot be ignored. The most important of these is to deceive people who have access to information whose reliability is controversial through social media. Deception, in general, aims to direct the thoughts of the people on a particular subject and create a social perception for a specific purpose. The detection of this phenomenon is becoming more and more important due to the enormous increase in the number of people using social networks. Although some researchers have recently proposed techniques for solving the problem of deception detection, there is a need to design and use high-performance systems in terms of different evaluation metrics. In this study, the problem of deception detection in online social networks is modeled as a classification problem and a methodology that detects misleading contents in social networks using text mining and machine learning algorithms is proposed. In this method, since the content is text-based, text mining processes are performed and unstructured data sets are converted to structured data sets. Then supervised machine learning algorithms are adapted and applied to the structured data sets. In this paper, real public data sets are used and Support Vector Machine, k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes, Random Forest, Decision Trees, Gradient Boosted Trees, and Logistic Regression algorithms are compared in terms of many different metrics.Öğe Multi-feature fusion and dandelion optimizer based model for automatically diagnosing the gastrointestinal diseases(Peerj Inc, 2024) Kiziloluk, Soner; Yildirim, Muhammed; Bingol, Harun; Alatas, BilalIt is a known fact that gastrointestinal diseases are extremely common among the public. The most common of these diseases are gastritis, reflux, and dyspepsia. Since the symptoms of these diseases are similar, diagnosis can often be confused. Therefore, it is of great importance to make these diagnoses faster and more accurate by using computer-aided systems. Therefore, in this article, a new artificial intelligence-based hybrid method was developed to classify images with high accuracy of anatomical landmarks that cause gastrointestinal diseases, pathological findings and polyps removed during endoscopy, which usually cause cancer. In the proposed method, firstly trained InceptionV3 and MobileNetV2 architectures are used and feature extraction is performed with these two architectures. Then, the features obtained from InceptionV3 and MobileNetV2 architectures are merged. Thanks to this merging process, different features belonging to the same images were brought together. However, these features contain irrelevant and redundant features that may have a negative impact on classification performance. Therefore, Dandelion Optimizer (DO), one of the most recent metaheuristic optimization algorithms, was used as a feature selector to select the appropriate features to improve the classification performance and support vector machine (SVM) was used as a classifier. In the experimental study, the proposed method was also compared with different convolutional neural network (CNN) models and it was found that the proposed method achieved better results. The accuracy value obtained in the proposed model is 93.88%.Öğe Multi-feature fusion and improved BO and IGWO metaheuristics based models for automatically diagnosing the sleep disorders from sleep sounds(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Akyol, Sinem; Yildirim, Muhammed; Alatas, BilalA night of regular and quality sleep is vital in human life. Sleep quality has a great impact on the daily life of people and those around them. Sounds such as snoring reduce not only the sleep quality of the person but also reduce the sleep quality of the partner. Sleep disorders can be eliminated by examining the sounds that people make at night. It is a very difficult process to follow and treat this process by experts. Therefore, this study, it is aimed to diagnose sleep disorders using computer-aided systems. In the study, the used data set contains seven hundred sound data which has seven different sound class such as cough, farting, laugh, scream, sneeze, sniffle, and snore. In the model proposed in the study, firstly, the feature maps of the sound signals in the data set were extracted. Three different methods were used in the feature extraction process. These methods are MFCC, Melspectrogram, and Chroma. The features extracted in these three methods are combined. Thanks to this method, the features of the same sound signal extracted in three different methods are used. This increases the performance of the proposed model. Later, the combined feature maps were analyzed using the proposed New Improved Gray Wolf Optimization (NI-GWO), which is the improved version of the Improved Gray Wolf Optimization (I-GWO) algorithm, and the proposed Improved Bonobo Optimizer (IBO) algorithm, which is the improved version of the Bonobo Optimizer (BO). In this way, it is aimed to run the models faster, reduce the number of features, and obtain the most optimum result. Finally, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) supervised shallow machine learning methods were used to calculate the metaheuristic algorithms' fitness values. Different types of metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, F1 etc., were used for the performance comparison. Using the feature maps optimized by the proposed NI-GWO and IBO algorithms, the highest accuracy value was obtained from the SVM classifier with 99.28% for both metaheuristic algorithms.Öğe Multi-task advanced convolutional neural network for robust lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosis, classification, and segmentation(Peerj Inc, 2025) Yalcin, Sercan; Yalcin, Zuhal Cetin; Yildirim, Muhammed; Alatas, BilalAcute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a hematologic malignancy characterized by the overproduction of immature lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Accurate and timely diagnosis of ALL is crucial for effective management. This article introduces a novel multi-task advanced convolutional neural network (MTA-CNN) framework for ALL detection in medical imaging data by simultaneously performing, expression classification, and disease detection. The MTA-CNN is based on a deep learning architecture that can handle multiple tasks simultaneously, allowing it to learn more comprehensive and generalizable features. With, expression classification, and disease detection tasks, the MTA-CNN effectively leverages the complementary information from each task to improve overall performance. The proposed framework employs CNNs to extract informative features from medical images. These features capture the spatial and temporal characteristics of the data, which are essential for accurate ALL diagnosis. The cascaded structure of the MTA-CNN allows the model to learn features at different levels of abstraction, from low-level to high-level, enabling it to capture both fine-grained and coarse-grained information. To ensure the reliability of the detection results, non-maximum suppression is employed to eliminate redundant detections, focusing only on the most likely candidates. Additionally, the MTA-CNN's ability to accurately localize key facial landmarks provides valuable information for further analysis, including identifying abnormal structures or changes in anatomical features associated with ALL. Experimental results on a comprehensive dataset of medical images demonstrate the superiority of the MTA-CNN over other learning methods. The proposed framework achieved an accuracy of 0.978, precision of 0.979, recall of 0.967, F1-score of 0.973, specificity of 0.991, Cohen's kappa of 0.979, and negative predictive value (NPV) of 0.990. These metrics significantly outperform baseline models, highlighting the MTA-CNN's ability to accurately identify and classify ALL cases. The MTA-CNN offers a promising approach for improving the efficiency and accuracy of ALL diagnosis.
