A Novel Honeycomb-DD Multi Coil Design for Wireless Power Transfer Systems
(Ieee, 2023) Aydin, Emrullah; Onar, Omer C.; Mohammad, Mostak; Ozpineci, Burak
Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has received significant attention recently as an alternative charging method for batteries in a wide range of power levels. In the literature, many types of coil structures have been well-studied. Honeycomb coil arrays, which have been used mostly for low-power applications, have not been well-studied for high-power-level applications. In this paper, a novel honeycomb-DD coil design is proposed for high-power wireless battery charging systems. The proposed coil design with step by step design process is given and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to observe the full performance characteristics of the system for a 100 kW system. In addition, the misalignment tolerance of the proposed system was observed by shifting the secondary side charging pad at different misalignment positions, and the electromagnetic compatibility to the standards was investigated. The core and strand losses were obtained. The results show that the honeycomb coil array provides high coupling coefficient and better misalignment tolerance, making it a potential coil topology for WPT applications.

A novel hybrid coil design and implementation for wireless power transfer systems
(Edp Sciences S A, 2024) Pashaei, Ali; Aydin, Emrullah; Ozdemir, Mehmet Akif; Kosesoy, Yusuf; Aydemir, Mehmet Timur
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has been drawing a lot of attention in the last ten years parallel with the market increase in electric vehicles. Although conductive charging methods are still the preferred ones, WPT-based charging systems are used as clean and flexible alternatives. At the center of these systems are the transmitting and receiving coils, and different coil types have been proposed in the literature. This study proposes a square-hexagonal hybrid coil structure to increase magnetic coupling by shaping the magnetic field. In addition, this design aims to minimize the coupling coefficient variation for misaligned coils which is one of the most significant problems in WPT systems. A 3D model of the coils was created and analyzed using ANSYS, Maxwell software. Compared to the conventional square coil structure the coupling coefficient of the proposed structure is less affected by misalignment on the x and y axes, and as a result, it has a better efficiency. In addition, a WPT system operating at 50 W, 85-kHz is designed and tested in a laboratory environment. The FEA analyses and experimental application results largely overlap, and accordingly, the coil-to-coil efficiency of our WPT system was 93.5% and the overall efficiency of the system was 87%.

An Intelligent Metasurface-Based Wireless Power Transfer System
(Ieee, 2023) Aydin, Emrullah; Ekti, Ali Riza; Chowdhury, Shajjad; Onar, Omer C.; Piersall, Elizabeth
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems are getting more popular in recent years in a wide range of application areas. However, the performance of wireless power transfer systems is adversely affected by coil misalignment and increased power transfer distance. To overcome the limitations, the proposed method in this paper will place an intelligent controllable metasurface between the transmitter and receiver coils. The goal is to establish the feasibility of a metasurface-assisted, intelligent WPT charging system by variable coil design and angle of arrival estimation using machine learning for multiple misalignment cases. We will feed these angles of arrival data to reconfigure the metasurface. The inclusion of a controllable metasurface will improve efficiency and increase the power transfer distance.

Dual Side Control Design for a 600W LCC Compensated Wireless Power Transfer System
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Pashaei, Ali; Aydin, Emrullah; Aydemir, Mehmet Timur
The purpose of this paper is to design a dual side control for a 600 W LCC resonant WPT electrical bicycle with an 85 kHz resonant frequency. Primary side control use inverter voltage and current to determine mutual inductance and load value in coils misalignment case. The secondary side control uses a DC-DC converter that has two voltage and current feedback with a PI controller to achieve CC/CV charging in the battery. Additionally, with primary side control the high-frequency inverter operates in ZVS mode. Optimal design parameters are obtained and results and control method feasibility validated by simulations. © 2022 IEEE.

Parallel-Input Series-Output Z-Source Converters for High Voltage DC Power Supplies
(Ieee, 2023) Ozdemir, Mehmet Akif; Aydin, Emrullah; Dag, Bulent; Tamyurek, Bunyamin; Aydemir, Mehmet Timur
High Voltage DC power supplies typically employ a high voltage high frequency transformer to step-up the voltage generated by a high frequency inverter. Generally, the step-up ratio of the transformers is high and therefore the effect of the stray capacitance and inductance values is amplified, deteriorating the inverter operation. LCC converters utilizing these stray capacitors are suggested to generate soft switching for better efficiency, but this increases the complexity. Also, the varying nature of the stray capacitance may complicate the control. In this paper, a modular, Parallel-Input Series-Output converter utilizing two z-source dc-dc converters is proposed to step a 350V input to generate 2-kV, 2-kW output. Simulation and experimental results prove that impedance source converters which are generally used in renewable energy applications can also be used at high voltage applications.

The effects of particle mass fraction and static magnetic field on the thermal performance of NiFe2O4 nanofluid in a heat pipe
(Elsevier France-Editions Scientifiques Medicales Elsevier, 2023) Aydin, Duygu Yilmaz; Aydin, Emrullah; Guru, Metin
In this study, experimental investigations are performed in order to determine the thermal performance of NiFe(2)O(4 )nanoparticles dispersed in deionized water in a thermosyphon-type heat pipe. The effects of the magnetic flux density and nanoparticle mass fraction were analyzed at different heat inputs and cooling water flow rates. The magnetic field was generated by the current-carrying solenoid. Our results indicated that the use of NiFe2O4 nanofluid significantly improves the thermal performance of the heat pipe which also showed that the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient can be obtained with increasing mass fraction and in presence of a low parallel magnetic field. A decrease of 26.6% was achieved in the temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser regions compared to distilled water at a 3% mass fraction and under a magnetic field. The maximum improvement in heat pipe's thermal resistance was found as 30.4%, through NiFe(2)O(4 )nanofluid usage under magnetic field. Compared to base fluid, the application of magnetic nanofluid and parallel magnetic field reduces the thermal resistance, increases heat pipe efficiency and the heat transfer coefficient.

Thermal Analysis of a 100 kW Polyphase Wireless Power Transfer System
(Ieee, 2024) Aydin, Emrullah; Barua, Himel; Aktas, Ahmet; Mohammad, Mostak; Onar, Omer C.; Ozpineci, Burak
Charging Electric Vehicles (EVs) fast and safely has a crucial role in the future of the EV technology. High-power Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) helps to significantly decrease the charging time. However, when the power transfer levels increase, thermal management becomes a significant challenge. The thermal design of the WPT systems needs more consideration in the design and implementation steps. This paper presents a thermal analysis of a 100 kW high-power WPT system. The thermal performance of the proposed design was evaluated at different power levels by considering the magnetic design and loss analysis. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the proposed design was performed and the thermal images of the implemented system were taken to prove the simulation results. The results show that, a liquid cooling design is needed for a high-power WPT systems for the long-time continuous operations of the charging pads.
