CHANGES AND DISEASES OF THE KIDNEY IN OLD AGE

Investigation of the Effects of Hydronephrosis on Renal Morphometry and Volume Values
(Erciyes Üniversitesi, 2025) Akçiçek, Mehmet; Uzun, Gökçe Bağcı; Arpacı, Muhammed Furkan; Demirel, Emre; Pekmez, Hıdır
Hydronephrosis is a significant clinical condition characterized by dilatation of the renal collecting system, parenchymal thinning, and loss of volume due to increased intrapelvic pressure, leading to disruption of both the morphological and functional integrity of the kidney. In this study, renal volume and morphometric measurements were compared between individuals with and without hydronephrosis using computed tomography (CT) images, and the impact of hydronephrosis on renal volume and geometry was evaluated using three different volume measurement methods. This retrospective study included non-contrast abdominal CT scans obtained between 2017 and 2022. A total of 91 cases (50 with hydronephrosis and 41 without hydronephrosis) were evaluated. Renal volumes were calculated using semi-automatic segmentation with ITK-SNAP (Volsinak), manual area measurement with RadiAnt DICOM Viewer, and the ellipsoid formula method. Additionally, morphometric parameters such as renal thickness, width, length, polar distances (PSAD, PIAD), distances to the spinal medulla (PSMSD, PIMSD), and the angular measurement between the kidney and the transverse plane (BUTDANGLE) were assessed. The findings demonstrated significant differences in thickness, width, and BUTDANGLE parameters in hydronephrotic kidneys (p < 0.05), indicating that hydronephrosis disrupts not only kidney volume but also its geometric structure. A statistically significant difference was observed among the three volume measurement methods (p = 0.001), with the ellipsoid method tending to underestimate renal volume. In conclusion, this study reveals that hydronephrosis leads to marked structural and geometrical alterations in renal morphometry and volume values. It also highlights that three-dimensional semi-automatic segmentation-based methods provide more reliable assessments in renal volume analysis and contribute uniquely to the literature by incorporating novel morphometric parameters.

Investigation of the relationship between foot length, foot pain and function
(Malatya Turgut Özal Üniversitesi, 2024) Demirel, Emre; Uzun, Gökçe Bağcı; Çiçek, İpek Balıkçı
Background: This study explores the relationship between foot morphology, foot pain, and functional limitations, focusing on how foot length and gender differences affect these factors. Foot pain is a prevalent issue affecting daily life and is influenced by factors such as foot structure, footwear choices, and gender. Materials and Methods: . The study involved 218 university students, divided evenly by gender, who completed the Foot Function Index questionnaire, assessing pain, disability, and activity limitations. Results: Data analyses revealed significant gender differences, with women experiencing more pain and functional limitations than men, possibly due to biomechanical and footwear differences. Chronic disease was also associated with higher levels of pain and limitations, aligning with the literature on chronic health issues' impacts on mobility and quality of life. Other factors, including psychological disorders, smoking, and terrain of upbringing, showed minimal impact on foot health, though footwear choice was notable—those wearing sneakers reported lower pain levels. Conclusions: The study suggests that foot morphology and gender influence foot pain and function, emphasizing the importance of personalized interventions in footwear design and preventive care to improve foot health outcomes.

Relationship between post traumatic stress disorder and hand dimensions and hand grip strength in children aged 8-12 exposed to earthquakes
(Nature Portfolio, 2024) Uzun, Gokce Bagci; Arslan, Ayla; Arpaci, Muhammed Furkan; Demirel, Emre; Karakas, Nese
Earthquakes cause severe destruction in the region where they occur. Children and adolescents are the group most affected group by earthquakes, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is most common in this group. The age-related increase in Grip Strength varies between childhood and early adolescence. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Hand Grip and Hand Measurements of children exposed to the Kahramanmara & scedil;-centered earthquake on February 6, 2023. The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Response Scale for Children was administered to 116 children who in children between the ages of 8 and 12 groups, and consent was obtained from the participants. Morphometric measurements of the hands of the children were measured with a digital caliper. Children's hand Grip Strength measurements were made by using a digital hand dynamometer. The analysis of study data was performed with the SPSS (Statistical Program in Social Sciences) 25 software. Positive and statistically significant relationships were detected between right and left-hand Grip Strength and right and left-hand measurements of females and males (p < 0.05). Statistically significant and negative relationships were detected between PTSD and right and left-hand Grip Strength and right and left-hand measurements in females and males (p < 0.05).In the present study, it was detected that as post-traumatic stress disorder increases, hand Grip Strength decreases. We think that these findings will guide future prospective studies.
