A comparative melissopalynological study of royal jelly from Turkey
(Taylor & Francis, 2022) Yıl, Gülşah; Karlıdağ, Semiramis; Akyol, Abuzer; Köseman, Abdurrahman; Uyumlu, Ayşe Burçin; Yılmaztekin, Murat; Erdoğan, Selim; Şeker, İbrahim
Three treatments (Glucose, Sucrose, Bee Feed Syrup) were used to examine the influence of supplementary feeding on the pollen spectrum of the royal jelly produced by Apis mellifera L. colonies. Apis mellifera colonies were located in the Battalgazi and Dogansehir districts of Malatya province in Turkey. In total 255 royal jelly samples were investigated and the analysis recorded over 30 taxa. In both sites the control group heavily utilised Quercus, Verbascum, Astragalus, and Lamiaceae. The feeding treatments saw Quercus, Verbascum, and Astragalus still being used but in different proportions. The utilisation of Lamiaceae was much reduced and Echium became an important component in colonies that had supplementary feeding. © 2022 Collegium Palynologicum Scandinavicum.

Effects of various conditions related to circadian rhythm disturbances on plasma and erythrocyte lipids in rats: a peroxisomal perspective
(2024) Otlu, Hüsniye Gül; UGUR, Yılmaz; Yıldız, Azibe; Erdoğan, Selim; Yologlu, Saim; Vardi, Nigar; Güldür, Tayfun
Purpose: Lipidomics studies of sleep restriction, which is known to be associated with circadian perturbations, revealed alterations in some plasma phospholipid levels including plasmalogens which are partly synthesized in liver peroxisomes. To this end it was aimed to investigate effects of various conditions known to cause circadian rhythm disturbances on various peroxisomal parameters and to compare those effects with that of fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha agonist. Materials and methods: Plasmalogens and some fatty acids in erythrocyte lysates were analyzed by GC. Peroxisomal metabolites including very long chain fatty acids as well as phytanic and pristanic acids in plasma were measured by GC-MS. Immunohistological analyses by catalase antibodies were conducted on liver sections. Results: All the conditions tested exhibited increased catalase immunoreactivity in liver sections compared to that of controls. Both calorie restriction, time-restricted feeding, as well as fenofibrate treatment exhibited lower C18:0 plasmalogen contents of erythrocyte lysates. As plasmalogens are known to be synthesized by peroxisomes, the present results suggest that the peroxisomal lipid content in membranes might be affected by conditions co-occuring with circadian perturbations. Conclusion: Shared effects of conditions associated with circadian rhythm disturbances and peroxisomal induction by fenofibrate on erythrocyte membrane lipids might indicate a link between them.

Fruit quality and biochemical characteristics of new early ripening apricots of Turkey
(Springer, 2021) Çuhacı, Çiğdem; Karaat, Fırat Ege; Uğur, Yılmaz; Erdoğan, Selim; Asma, Bayram Murat
In this study, the important fruit quality characteristics of 11 early ripening and promising apricot hybrids and reference cultivars recently developed in Turkey were analyzed. A large variation was observed between the genotypes in terms of fruit size (fruit weight ranged from 34.28 to 72.53 g). The total soluble solids which is one of the significant fruit quality parameters for the table apricots, was found between 10.07 and 18.27% and fruit flesh/kernel rate was between 9.6 and 18.42. Epicatechin, rutin, catechin, chlorogenic acid, epigallocatechin gallate and ?-carotene were found to be the highest bioactive compounds. A large variation was also determined among the genotypes in this regard. ABP-4-23 and ABP-7-12 apricot genotypes were rich with respect to catechin, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, rutin and ?-carotene. The highest catachin and epicatechin contents were obtained in ABP-4-23 (176.76 and 517.45 mg/kg, respectively). In terms of ?-carotene ABP-2-24 and ABP-1-18 presented the highest values (127.45 and 119.54 mg/kg, respectively). Fruit weight was found highly and positively correlated with kernel weight and total soluble solids (r?=?0.65 and r?=?0.61, respectively). Fruit weight was also found to be moderately correlated with rutin, quercetin, and ?-carotene, while corrrelations was negative for rutin and ?-carotene. Total acidity was moderately correlated with catechin, epigallocatechin gallate and ?-carotene in positive way.

Mid-autumn spermiation in outdoor-cultured pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) using different gonadoliberin application strategies
(Elsevier, 2021) Özgür, Mustafa Erkan; Erdoğan, Selim; Rašković, Božidar; Fazekasd, Georgina; Ljubobratovićd, Uroš
This study aimed to find the optimal strategy for the application of salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (sGnRHa) in outdoor-cultured pikeperch males in an exceptionally early term in early November. According to the histological examination, on the day of hormonal treatment, pikeperch testes were in the late stadium of spermatogenesis, with 78.7% of germ cells attributed to sperm cells. Five experimental groups were established varying on hormonal preparations and water temperature: (1) sGnRHa (25 ?g kg?1) was applied to fish at pre-warming at water temperature of 11 °C (GnRH-LOW); (2) sGnRHa (25 ?g kg?1) was applied to fish post-warming at water temperature of 15 °C (GnRH-HIGH); (3) priming group (5 ?g kg?1 at 11 °C +25 ?g kg?1 at 15 °C); (4) reference group – fish were injected with human chorionic gonadotropin; (5) control group - fish were injected with saline solution. Sperm was obtained from all fish in hormonally treated groups, whereas the fish treated with saline did not spermiate. The greatest values of the straight-line velocity (VSL), the curvilinear velocity (VCL), and the angular path velocity (VAP) of sperm cells, as well as the amounts of Mg2+, K+, and Na+ in the sperm seminal plasma, were obtained in GnRH-HIGH, whereas the GnRH-LOW group yielded the greatest sperm volume. Among the ions in seminal plasma, K+ and Na+ dominated and showed a relationship with sperm kinematic parameters. According to the obtained data, sGnRHa can be considered as an appropriate hormonal preparation to induce spermiation at an early preseason. Either before or after warming, sGnRHa application can yield sperm of proper quantity and quality as early as 5 months before the natural spawning season. A comprehensive study is recommended to evaluate the full period of sperm availability in outdoor-reared males, followed by direct evaluation of the fertilizing capacity.

Pharmacokinetic Profiles of Metamizole Metabolites after Intramuscular and Intravenous Administration in Healthy Arabian Horses
(Wiley, 2021) Yılmaz, İsmet; Maraş, Zeynep; Uğur, Yılmaz; Özgür, Mustafa Erkan; Durmaz, Murat; Ulusoy, Halil İbrahim; Erdoğan, Selim
Metamizole sodium (MT) is an analgesic and antipyretic drug molecule used in humans, horses, cattle, swine, and dogs. Metamizole rapidly hydrolyzes and turns into methylamino antipyrine (MAA), an active primary metabolite of MT. The present study aims to determine the pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles of MT metabolites after intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration into sex of Arabian horses (Equus ferus caballus) using a cross-over study design. The plasma samples were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) method, and plasma concentrations of MT metabolites were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After administrations of MT, plasma concentrations of methylamino antipyrine (MAA), amino antipyrone (AA), and acetylamino antipyrone (AAA) were determined within range of 15 min-12 h. Plasma concentrations of AA and AAA were lower than the plasma concentrations of major metabolite MAA at each sampling point. The PK parameters were statistically evaluated for MT's metabolites between male and female horses and also between IM and IV administrations of PK parameters such as Cmax , tmax , t1/2?z , AUC0-t , AUC0-? , ?z, Cl and Vss (p < .05). The AUCIM /AUCIV ratio in female and male horses for MAA was 1.19 and 1.13, respectively. The AUCIM /AUCIV ratio for AA was lower than those found for MAA. AUCIM /AUCIV ratio was statistically significantly different between male and female horses for AA (p < .05). According to these results, some PK parameters such as Cmax, AUC, and MRT, MAA and AA concentrations have shown statistically significant differences by MT administrations.
