Öğe Acute effects of high intensity interval training on cognitive function in smokers and nonsmokers(2025) Karakaş, Neşe; Özyalın, Fatma; Kartal, Mert; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Bayer, Ramazan; Kurt, Zeynep Eker; Keskinkılıç, KorhanThe use of tobacco is widespread among both active and inactive individuals. However, its adverse effects appear less pronounced in those who exercise regularly. Since smoking may differentially impact smokers and nonsmokers, this study examined the immediate effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on cognitive performance in both groups. Forty inactive participants (20 smokers, 20 nonsmokers) were included, with mean ages of 20.35±1.26 and 20.15±1.38 years, respectively. The HIIT protocol involved five exercises. Cognitive performance was assessed immediately after the session using the Visual Cognitive Function Test (VCFT) and Auditory Cognitive Function Test (ACFT), each repeated five times, with results recorded in milliseconds. Pre-test VCFT scores were significantly higher in smokers (381.16±7.96 ms) compared to nonsmokers (372.24±11.17 ms, p=0.006). Post-test scores also differed (smokers: 607.50±43.33 ms; nonsmokers: 577.66±20.78 ms, p=0.007). The improvement from pre- to post-test was greater in nonsmokers (-48.39 ms, p < 0.001) than in smokers (-25.39 ms, p=0.021). In ACFT, no significant group differences were found at pre-test (p=0.080) or post-test (p=0.079), but both groups showed significant improvement following HIIT (p<0.001). These results suggest that smoking impairs visual cognitive performance more than auditory function after high-intensity exercise. The differences may stem from smoking-related vascular and neural plasticity deficits, which are critical for cognitive processing during and after exercise. Significance statement: This study highlights that smoking specifically reduces visual cognitive benefits from HIIT, while auditory function remains less affected. These findings emphasize the neurobiological consequences of smoking and support the role of exercise interventions in mitigating its adverse cognitive effects.Öğe Effect of meditation music and comedy movie interventions on postoperative kinesiophobia and pain in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty(Wiley, 2023) Cici, Remziye; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Kapikiran, GurkanBackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the effects of music and comedy movie interventions on postoperative pain and kinesiophobia in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. MethodsThis randomized-controlled study was carried out with the participation of patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. The patients were divided into three groups. To reduce surgical pain and kinesiophobia, the patients in group 1 watched a comedy movie, those in group 2 listened to music, and those in group 3 did not participate in any intervention other than the routine practices of the clinic. ResultsThe personal and medical characteristics of the patients in all groups were similar. The patients in all three groups were kinesiophobic, and their surgical pain levels were moderate despite pharmaceutical interventions. Groups 1 and 2 had a statistically significant decrease in kinesiophobia and pain scores after the interventions. The effects of having patients watch a comedy movie and having them listen to meditation music were not significantly different. ConclusionsThe results of the study showed that listening to meditation music or watching comedy movie scenes had significant positive effects in alleviating postoperative pain and kinesiophobia after TKA. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that patients watch comedy movies and listen to meditation music to alleviate their postoperative pain and kinesiophobia. The case of police officers in Türkiye(2024) KARTAL, Mert; KARAKAŞ, NEŞE; Kapikiran, GurkanAim: To assess police officers’ health beliefs about testicular cancer and their level of knowledge about testicular self-examination (TSE). Materials and Methods: The data for the study were collected from 120 volunteer police officers using a questionnaire asking for their introductory information and the Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale on Testicular Cancer and Screening. Results: 84.2% of the participants were married, 14.2% had a family history of cancer, 36.7% had never heard of testicular cancer, 81.7% had never heard of TSE and 87.5% had never performed TSE. The rate of those who do not know how to perform TSE is 80.8%. While 40.8% of police officers said that a palpable mass in the testicle was a sign of testicular cancer, 51.7% said that pain in the testicle, 29.1% swelling in the testicle, 47.5% pain or tenderness in the groin, 23.3% redness in the testicle and 20% weight loss would be signs of testicular cancer. Smokers had higher perceptions of the seriousness, benefits and barriers of TSE (p=0.048, p=0.002, p=0.031, respectively). Those with a family history of cancer and those with testicular problems had higher perceptions of sensitivity (p=0.010, p=0.003, respectively). Conclusion: It was found that there was a lack of knowledge about testicular cancer and TSE among police officers. It is recommended that health training is planned to provide information and to put the acquired knowledge into practice, and that qualitative public health studies are carried out on larger samples to identify the factors that prevent the implementation of TSE.Öğe Relation between Health Quality Perceptions and Patient Safety Cultures of Nurses Working in Surgical Clinics(2023) Kapikiran, Gurkan; Çetin, Yasin; YAYAN, Emriye HilalObjective: The study was carried out to determine the effect of health quality perceptions of nurses working in surgical clinics on patient safety culture. Materials and Methods: The research is descriptive type and correlational. The sample of the research consisted of 237 nurses. Personal Information Form created by the researchers, Patient Safety Culture Scale (PSCS), and Quality Perception Scale (QPS) were used as data collection tools in the study. Data were collected between January 2021 and February 2022. Results: The total mean score obtained from PSCS was found to be 3.36±0.21 in the study. In the study, it was found that the total mean score obtained from the QPS was 82.15±6.80. A positive, moderate correlation was found between the total score of PSCS and the total score of QPS (r= 0.407, p<0.01). Conclusions: It was determined that the increase in the quality perceptions of the nurses working in the surgical clinics increased the patient safety culture. It was observed that nurses who care for surgical patients attach importance to patient safety culture, especially in terms of patient benefit. It is recommended to organize in-service training programs to increase both quality perceptions and patient safety culture of healthcare professionals.Öğe The effect of bed exercises following major abdominal surgery on early ambulation, mobilization, pain and anxiety: A randomized-controlled trial(Wiley, 2024) Yaban, Zuleyha Simsek; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Gunes, Huseyin; Sahin, Sennur Kula; Saritas, SerdarThis randomized-controlled trial aimed to investigate the effect of bed exercises on postoperative anxiety, pain, early ambulation and mobilization. This study was conducted with a randomized-controlled trial design and in the general surgical clinic of a research and training hospital. A total of 120 patients (60 in the experimental group and 60 in the control group) scheduled for major abdominal surgery took part in the study. The data were collected using a patient information form, the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire and the Visual Analog Scale through face-to-face interviews. The patients in the experimental group performed 15-min bed exercises on the day of their operation, as well as on the postoperative first and second days, and the control group underwent only the routinely performed procedures in the clinic. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and t-tests. The sample of our study included major abdominal surgery patients. Ambulation was achieved at a mean time of 4 h earlier in the experimental group. On the postoperative first and second days, the patients in the experimental group had mean mobilization durations that were approximately 2 h longer compared with the patients in the control group. Moreover, the postoperative pain and anxiety levels of the patients in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the patients in the control group (p < 0.05). We recommend that bed exercises be performed to lower anxiety and pain severity, achieve early ambulation and increase the duration of mobilization among patients following major abdominal surgery.Öğe The effect of Covid-19 phobia on work stress and psychological resilience of nurses exposed to surgical smoke in the operating room(2022) Kapikiran, Gurkan; CİCİ, Remziye; Topdemir, Esra AnuşThe purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Covid-19 Phobia on the work stress and psychological resilience of nurses exposed to surgical smoke in the operating room emergency surgical interventions. This study was designed as descriptive and correlational research, and it was conducted with 160 nurses working in the operating room units of three different hospitals in Türkiye between the dates of August 2020 and May 2021. The work stress scale, brief resilience scale, and Covid-19 phobia scale (C19P-S) were used for data collection. It was determined that the mean work stress score of the nurses was high with a score of 40.11±4.91, the mean score for psycho- logical resilience was moderate with a score of 15.00±3.95, and the mean score for C19P-S was high with a score of 71.58±15.45. There was a significant negative strong (r: -.706) correlation found between Covid-19 phobia and psychological resilience. It was found that there was a positive moderate significant correlation (r: .589) between Covid-19 phobia and work stress (p<0.05). Covid-19 phobia was determined high for nurses exposed to surgical smoke, Covid-19 phobia increased work stress for nurses and negatively affected their psychological resilience level.Öğe The effect of cyberchondria on anxiety and surgical fear levels in surgical oncology patients(Springer, 2025) Polat, Hatice; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Kartal, MertThis study was conducted to examine the relationship between cyberchondria, surgical fear and anxiety in patients undergoing oncological surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with 163 patients in the general surgery clinics of a university hospital in T & uuml;rkiye between January and December 2023. The study revealed that mean total scores of cyberchondria, surgical fear and anxiety scales were moderate with values of 39.87 +/- 12.66, 45.84 +/- 19.80, and 28.83 +/- 11.76, respectively. A moderately significant positive correlation was observed between cyberchondria and surgical fear and anxiety levels (r:0.688, and r:0.684; p = 0.000, respectively), while a strongly significant positive relationship was found between surgical fear and anxiety levels (r: 0.759, p = 0.000). The results also demonstrated that 47% of patients' fear of surgery could be attributed to the independent variable of cyberchondria (R2: 0.470). The results demonstrated that 46% of the variance in anxiety levels could be attributed to the cyberchondria independent variable (R2: 0.468). The pervasive use of the internet has given rise to a growing tendency among individuals to seek disease-related information online. The study found that the patients exhibited moderate levels of cyberchondria, with an increase in the tendency corresponding to an increase in surgical fear and anxiety. It is recommended that healthcare professionals share detailed information with patients in a way that does not encourage them to engage in excessive online medical research and allocate sufficient time to patients to alleviate their surgical anxiety and fear.Öğe The Effect of Emergency Nurses' Psychological Resilience on Their Thanatophobic Behaviors: A Cross-Sectional Study(Sage Publications Inc, 2024) Kartal, Mert; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Karakas, NesePurpose This study analyzed the effect of emergency nurses' psychological resilience on their thanatophobic behaviors. Methods The research was conducted with 156 emergency nurses. In the data collection process, the Socio-Demographic Information Form, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Thanatophobia Scale were used. Results It was found that emergency nurses had medium-level psychological resilience and high-level thanatophobia. Besides, it was discerned that there was a moderate negative relationship between psychological resilience and thanatophobia (r:-.643, p: 0.000). Lastly, as per the simple linear regression analysis, it was identified that the predictor variable of psychological resilience accounted for 40.9% of the variance in the predicted variable of thanatophobia (R-2:.409, p: 0.000). Practice Implications Emergency nurses, who are faced with many negative situations, need to have a high level of psychological resilience in order to get out of the mental state brought by negative conditions as soon as possible, and it is recommended to carry out applications to increase psychological resilience.Öğe The Effect of Nomophobic Behaviors on Caring Behaviors in Nurses Working in Intensive Care Clinics(2023) Çetin, Yasin; AĞRALI, CANSU; ÜNAL, ESRA; Kapikiran, GurkanAim: It is known that nomophobia, which occurs as a result of phone addiction, causes individuals to experience more anxiety, depression and sleep problems than usual, and their quality of life and work performance are adversely affected. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of nurses exhibiting nomophobic behaviors on their care behaviors. Material and Methods: This research was conducted in a descriptive and relationship-seeking type. The minimum sample volume to be reached was calculated as 270 according to the known sample formula. The study was conducted with 284 nurses working in intensive care units. The research data were collected with Google Forms in February-May 2022. Introductory information form, Nomophobia Scale Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 were used to collect data. Results: Nomophobia scores were moderate with 90.09±28.47, and caring behaviors scores were high with 124.05±18.49. A low negative correlation (r=-0.178, p<0.01) was found between the total score of the Nomophobia and the total score of caring behaviors. Conclusions: In this research, it was found that nurses’ nomophobic behaviors affected their caring behaviors negatively. To eliminate the negative effect of nomophobia on caring behaviors, we recommend that the awareness of intensive care nurses about phone dependency and the effects of this dependency be raised.Öğe The effect of nursing care satisfaction on pain and anxiety levels of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery in the early postoperative period(2022) GÜNEŞ, HÜSEYİN; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Sarıtaş, SerdarIn our study, we aimed to examine the effect of nursing care satisfaction on the pain and anxiety levels of patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of patients who underwent surgery in the orthopedic clinic of a training and research hospital, and they were in the early postoperative period. Patient information form, Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used in data collection. In this study, we found that 41.2% of the orthopedic patients were between the ages of 36 and 50, and 60.4% of them were women. Both nursing care satisfaction and anxiety levels were found to be higher in women than men (p<0.05). The highest satisfaction rate was found among patients aged 18-35 years old, and the highest anxiety level was found in patients over the age of 66. In our study, we found that higher anxiety levels increased pain intensity, and a high level of nursing care satisfaction could be seen in various pain and anxiety levels. Our study showed that nursing care satisfaction was affected by pain and anxiety in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. In addition, it showed that pain and anxiety trigger each other. Clinicians should be aware of the negative effects of pain and anxiety on postoperative recovery. Strategies to increase nursing care satisfaction should be developed.Öğe The Effect of Surgical Nurses' Attitudes Towards Evidence-Based Practices on Patient Safety Culture: Descriptive and Relationship-Seeking Study(2024) Kapikiran, Gurkan; Çetin, Yasin; AĞRALI, CANSU; ÜNAL, ESRAAim: This study was aimed to evaluate the relationship and the effect of surgical nurses' attitudes to evidence-based nursing (EBN) practices on patient safety culture (PSC). Material and Method: The study was descriptive and correlational. The sample consisted of 364 nurses working in the surgical departments of a university hospital. Data were collected by using individual information form, attitude towards EBN scale and PSC scale. Results: The average total score of PSC of surgical nurses was 3.60±0.38 and the average total score of attitudes towards EBN practice was 60.07±6.01. There was a strong positive correlation between EBN practices and PSC (r=0.705, p=0.000). In the regression analysis, it was seen that the attitude towards EBN practices, which was the predictor variable, explained approximately 49.7% of the variance in the predicted variable of PSC (F=358.175; R2=0.497; p=0.000). Conclusion: It was determined that the attitudes of surgical nurses towards EBN practices and PSC were positive. It was found that surgical nurses with higher attitudes towards EBN practices had more positive attitudes towards PSC. Although PSC is important for nurses working in all clinics, it is more important for nurses working in surgical clinics. Therefore, it is recommended that working conditions should be improved and in-service trainings should be planned in line with the latest evidence findings.Öğe The effects of the nomophobic behaviors of emergency room nurses on their clinical decision-making perceptions: A cross-sectional study(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Kapikiran, Gurkan; Karakas, Nese; Kartal, MertThis study analyzed the effects of the nomophobic behaviors of emergency room nurses on their clinical decision -making perceptions. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed with the participation of 186 nurses working in emergency rooms of certain hospitals located in eastern Turkey. In the data collection process, a sociodemographic data form, the Nomophobia Questionnaire, and the Clinical Decision-Making in Nursing Scale were used. It was discerned that the participants had medium-level nomophobia (66.64 +/- 25.36) and clinical decision-making perceptions (149.00 +/- 26.33). A strong negative relationship was identified between nomophobia and clinical decision-making perceptions (r:-.730, p < 0.01). Moreover, it was found that the predictor variable, nomophobia explained 53% of the variance in the predicted variable, clinical decision-making perceptions (R2: 0.530, p: 0.000). In the study, it was found that emergency room nurses had medium-level nomophobia and clinical decision-making perceptions. Besides, we observed that the clinical decision-making perception levels of the participants decreased as their nomophobia levels increased. As the risk of making medical errors is likely to increase along with an increase in nomophobia levels, it is recommended that edu-cation programs be organized to get emergency room nurses' nomophobic behaviors under control.Öğe The evaluation of the training, the approach to epilepsy and epileptic seizure, which was given to teachers in Turkiye(Wiley, 2024) Kartal, Mert; Karakas, Nese; Tuz, Pinar; Kapikiran, GurkanIntroduction: Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder among humans after headaches. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 50-65 million individuals were diagnosed with epilepsy throughout the world, and around two million new cases of epilepsy are added to this figure every year. Methods: Designed as descriptive and cross-sectional research, this study was performed on 132 elementary school teachers. Training on epilepsy and epileptic seizure was given to teachers. The pretest and posttest research data were collected with the face-to-face interview method. In this process, the epilepsy knowledge scale was used as well as a survey form that had questions designed to find out about teachers' personal characteristics. The Statistical Package for Social Science 25.0 was utilized in the statistical analysis of research data. In the research, the statistical significance was identified if the p-value was below.05 (p < .05). Results: Of all teachers participating in the study, 59.1% were female, 90.2% were married, and 47.7% witnessed an epilepsy seizure before. The mean of teachers' pretest epilepsy knowledge scores was 8.43 +/- 4.31 points before the training while the mean of their posttest epilepsy knowledge scores was 12.65 +/- 2.48 points after the training. The difference between the means of pretest and posttest scores was statistically significant (p = .000). After the training, there was a statistically significant increase in means of scores obtained by teachers from each item of the epilepsy knowledge scale (p < .05). Conclusions: As there was a statistically significant improvement in levels of teachers' knowledge about both epilepsy and epileptic seizure after the training, it is recommended that the training about the approach to epilepsy and epileptic seizure be given to all teachers, and additionally, including these topics in the course curricula of universities is recommended. imageÖğe The Relationship Between Preoperative Cyberchondria Levels and Death Anxiety of Liver Donors(Wiley, 2025) Cici, Remziye; Topdemir, Esra Anus; Kapikiran, GurkanThis descriptive and correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship between preoperative levels of cyberchondria and death anxiety in liver donors. It was conducted with 158 liver transplant donors hospitalized in the organ transplant clinics of a Liver Transplant Institute in eastern Turkey. The total score for the death anxiety scale was high (9.97 +/- 2.29), while the cyberchondria scale had a moderate mean total score (44.98 +/- 5.86). A moderately significant positive correlation was observed between the total scores of the death anxiety and cyberchondria scales (r: 0.427, p: 0.000). The death anxiety variable was found to account for 18% of the cyberchondric tendencies observed in the donors (R2: 0.182). It was observed that individuals who became living donors while still alive and without any problems experienced high levels of death anxiety. In this situation, donors conducted their research on the internet, resulting in above-average levels of cyberchondria and the training and information provided by the transplant teams. Effective donor education and psychosocial support can reduce both death anxiety and cyberchondric tendencies in liver transplant donors.
