Öğe A Study on the Views and Thoughts of Dog Owners in Turkiye on Animal Welfare(Gesellschaft Schweizer Tierarztinnen & Tierarzte, 2024) Seker, Ibrahim; Koseman, A.; Erten, O.; Ozen, A.The aim of the present study was to determine the views and thoughts of dog owners in Turkiye on animal welfare. The research material consisted of data obtained from face-to-face surveys with 172 randomly selected dog owners. Half of the dog owners (54,7 %) were aware of the concept of animal welfare, and almost two-thirds (61,6 %) organized their dogs' living spaces according to animal welfare principles. Participants most associated the concept of animal welfare with the concept of animal quality of life (47,7 %). Gender (p<0.01) and education level (p<0.01) had an effect on the understanding of the animal welfare concept; female and higher eductation resulted in a broader understanding. More than half of the participants (54,1 %) obtained information about animal welfare from written and visual non-evidence based media.Öğe Comparative Effects of in Ovo and Post-Hatch Taurine Administration on White Striping Myopathy in Broiler Chickens(Facta - Fundacao Apoio Ciencia & Tecnologia Animal, 2026) Baykalir, Y.; Simsek, U. G.; Seker, I; Koseman, A.; Gul, B.; Timurkaan, N.; Beyazgul, P.This study evaluated the effects of taurine supplementation administered in ovo and via drinking water on growth performance, carcass traits, oxidative stress status, and white striping (WS) incidence in broiler chickens. A total of 720 fertilized eggs were randomly allocated to three groups: Control (no treatment), Sham (sterile distilled water injection), and in ovo taurine (IOT; 1.30 mg/egg). After hatching, chicks were assigned to four experimental groups: Control, Sham, IOT, and taurine via drinking water (DWT), administered daily as a freshly prepared stock solution (250mg/10mL). Growth performance was monitored over 42 days. The IOT group exhibited reduced feed intake and body weight gain during the later growth stages. Carcass analysis revealed significantly lower breast and thigh weights in the IOT group (p<0.001), whereas liver weight was highest in the DWT group. No significant differences in WS scores or breast pH were observed among treatments (p>0.05). Histological evaluation showed that IOT significantly reduced the severity of lipidosis, particularly toward the end of the experimental period (p<0.001). Regarding oxidative stress, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were elevated in the Control and DWT groups, while reduced glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were significantly higher in the IOT and Sham groups (p<0.001). The lowest expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and the highest levels of fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5/irisin) were observed in the IOT group (p<0.001). Although in ovo taurine supplementation did not improve growth performance or carcass yield, it enhanced antioxidant capacity and muscle metabolism.Öğe Effect of udder type on udder traits, milk yield and some physicochemical characteristics of milk in Awassi ewes(Hellenic Veterinary Medical Soc, 2022) Seker, I.; Koseman, A.; Kul, S.; Seker, P.; Kocyigit, S.In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of udder type on milk yield, udder and teat traits, and some physicochemical properties of milk in Awassi ewes. For this purpose, 54 ewes of 3-4 years old were used.In this study, Type-3 udder, which was reported to be prevalent in breeded Awassi ewes. Type-4, Type-5, and Type-6 udders were not detected in ewes. The lactation period, lactation, and the daily average milk yield values were calculated as 208.33 days, 138.59 liters, and 659.49 ml, respectively. The 90th day of lactation measurements were as follows: udder circumference (44.58 +/- 0.51 cm), udder width (13.20 +/- 0.36 cm), udder depth (17.66 +/- 0.58 cm), udder volume (881.25 +/- 37.41 ml), teat length-right (3.84 +/- 0.15 cm), teat length-left (3.64 +/- 0.17 cm), teat diameter-right (2.07 +/- 0.14 cm). The values of the physicochemical characteristics of milk generally showed an increase from the beginning to the middle periods of lactation and then decreased. In conclusion, udder type had no significant effect on the lactation period, milk yield, udder and teat characteristics and the physicochemical properties of milk in Awassi ewes. New studies are required in the determination of the yield and other characteristics of ewes in Turkey.Öğe Effects of Alchemilla vulgaris on haematology and antioxidant status of heat- stressed quails during the late laying period(Hellenic Veterinary Medical Soc, 2021) Koseman, A.; Akdemir, F.; Uremis, N.; Seker, I; Turkoz, Y.The effects of Alchemilla vulgaris (AV) on haematology and serum, liver, and ovarian antioxidant status of heat-stressed quail in the late laying period were observed in this study. A 2x3 factorial design was used with 0, 1 and 3% AV fed in thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS) conditions. A total of 150 quails were randomly assigned to six groups. The quails were located in temperature controlled rooms. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and platelet distribution width (PDW) obtained in quail fed 1% AV were higher than in 3% AV under both TN and HS conditions. Comparing 3% AV to 1% AV, the concentration of MCH obtained for 1% AV was higher in HS and lower in TN conditions. Besides, quails fed for 1% AV had a lower procalcitonin (PCT) value in HS than 3% AV but this PCT value was the same in TN. The serum malondialdehyde (MDA) was lower in 1% AV than 3% AV in both HS and TN. The ovarian MDA was lower in TN than HS. In both TN and HS conditions, the ovarian MDA value was determined higher for 1% AV than for 3% AV. The liver glutathione (GSH) value was higher in 1% AV than 3% AV in both TN and HS conditions. The Total Oxidant Capacity (TOS) value was found higher for 3% AV in TN and 1% AV in HS. The serum GSH, TOS, and oxidative stress index (OSI) values were lower for 3% AV compared to 1% AV for both TN and HS conditions, whereas for MDA value this was the opposite. The ovarium MDA and TOS values were lower for 3% AV than for 1% AV in both TN and HS. Also, the liver MDA, GSH, and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAS) values were lower for 3% AV than for 1% AV in both TN and HS conditions. Finally, dietary AV has been shown to have a partial antioxidative effect on the defense system and also has effect on red blood cell profiles and platelet counts rather than white blood cell profiles.Öğe The effects of different industrial sugars on royal jelly production(Hellenic Veterinary Medical Soc, 2022) Karlidag, S.; Koseman, A.; Akyol, A.; Yil, G.; Seker, I.; Uyumlu, A. B.; Erdogan, S.In this study, the larval acceptance rate and the royal jelly yield in honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies supplemented with different industrial sugars at different locations were determined. For this purpose, feeding groups (1. Sucrose group, 2. Glucose group, 3. Bee feed syrup group, 4. Control group) and locations (1. Battalgazi, 2. Dogansehir) were formed. In queenless colonies that produce royal jelly, in order to sustain 5-15 day-old young feeder worker bees, two sealed frames with brood from support colonies were added. The royal jelly yield was harvested seven times. Based on the location, the feeding groups, and the location x feeding groups interaction, 12600 larvae were grafted, 9054 larvae were accepted, and the larval acceptance rate was determined as 71.86%. Based on the location, feeding groups and the location x feeding group interaction, the yield per cell was calculated as 213.15 +/- 11.53 mg/ cell, the yield per colony as 6.88 +/- 0.38 g/app., and the total yield per colony as 34.40 +/- 1.91 g/colony. In the study, no statistically significant difference was determined between feeding with sucrose, bee feed and the supplementary feeding with glucose. On the other hand, it was determined that the location where the royal jelly was produced affected both the larval acceptance and the royal jelly yield.
