Determination of awareness, attitude and sensitiveness of dog owners and levels of understanding of dog body language
(Univ Zulia, Facultad Ciencias Veterinarias, 2023) Seker, Ibrahim; Erten, Omer; Koseman, Abdurrahman
This research was carried out to determine the identification of the awareness, attitude and sensitiveness of dog owners in Turkiye, and levels of understanding the body language of dogs. The research material consisted of data obtained from face-to-face surveys with randomly selected 172 dog owners. In the study, the differences between the education level categories of dog owners were found to be statistically significant (P<0.01), but not for marital status, child ownership, age and household income (P>0.05). In addition, the rate of those who did not have children was found to be higher among those who adopted dogs for the reasons of animal love/compassion (58.6%) and feeling of loneliness (75.0%). According to the findings, dog owners spend a maximum of 1-2 hours with their dogs during the day. Men have more difficulty in caring for their dogs than women due to lack of time, financial constraints and other reasons. In this study, dog owners were able to correctly identify 10 of the 20 images of dog body language at a medium and high level (50.0-95.3%), and 10 of them at a low and very low level (47.7-4.1%). As a result; It is important for those who want to have a dog to make an attempt by questioning whether they have the necessary time, energy and financial means. In addition, it is thought that it is important to learn the body language of dogs, that there is a need for institutional structures that will help people who own or want to acquire dogs in this regard and in the field of general breeding, and teach them the requirements of their responsibilities.

Determination of udder and teat linear morphological traits in Awassi and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka) Ewes
(Univ Zulia, Facultad Ciencias Veterinarias, 2024) Seker, Ibrahim; Kul, Selim; Koseman, Abdurrahman
This study was carried in order to evaluate the linear morphological characteristics of the udder and teats in the breeder conditions of Awassi and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka) ewes ( Ovis aries ) and to determine the udder types, lactation milk yield and the lactation period of the ewes. One hundred two Awassi and 61 Bafra ewes were included in the study. The means of the linear scores of udder depth, udder furrow, udder attachment, teat shape, teat angle and teat placement in Awassi ewes were determined as 6.10 +/- 0.27, 6.33 +/- 0.27, 4.49 +/- 0.27, 6.49 +/- 0.33, 3.98 +/- 0.29, and 1.47 +/- 0.14, respectively. The same parameters were determined as 6.31 +/- 0.28, 6.77 +/- 0.32, 5.72 +/- 0.24, 1.20 +/- 0.11, 1.72 +/- 0.26, and 1.20 +/- 0.11, respectively, in Bafra ewes. Significant differences were found between Awassi and Bafra breeds in terms of udder types ( P <0.01). The type 3 udder, suitable for milking, was determined at the highest rate in both breeds, but type 2 udder was not detected in Awassi ewes. Statistically significant differences were found between Awassi and Bafra ewes in terms of linear morphological characteristics of udder and teat, udder attachment, teat shape, teat angle and 60 th day milk yield, daily average milk yield and lactation period ( P <0.01). Lactation milk yield and lactation period were calculated as 139.85 +/- 5.31 kg and 208.53 +/- 4.471 days, respectively, in Awassi ewes and 145.91 +/- 9.97 kg and 175.23 +/- 4.635 days in Bafra ewes, respectively. As a result, in order for linear udder characteristics to be used safely as an indirect selection criterion, there is a need for studies with a higher number of ewes and to calculate the repeatability and heritability.

Identification of the psychological and behavioral conditions of cats from owners' perspective during the COVID-19 pandemic in Türkiye
(Univ Cordoba, 2025) Ozturk, Yahya; Erten, Omer; Seker, Ibrahim; Koseman, Abdurrahman
Objective. This study aims to examine the psychological and behavioral status of domestic cats (Felis catus) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods. Study's material included the data collected from the responses of 306 cat owners who participated in the survey voluntarily. Results. During the study, 36.9% of the participating cat owners reported that their cats had some abnormal behaviors besides their normal behaviors during the pandemic. The most frequently mentioned abnormal behaviors were increased meowing (38.8%) and a greater desire for close contact (38.8%). Furthermore, 4.4% of cat owners said that their cats had abnormal behaviors like not using the litter box and urinating everywhere. Conclusions. As a result, the majority of cat owners who have participated in this study stated that there was no significant change in the mood and behavior of their cats during the COVID-19 pandemic, that it was beneficial to be a cat owner, and that they did not face many difficulties in taking care of their cats. Pets, with whom people spent more time during the pandemic, should be monitored in terms of animal welfare after the pandemic. Providing pet owners with information on special animal welfare would be beneficial in understanding the changes in human-animal interactions in similar pandemics and managing this process effectively.

(Wiley, 2024) Baykalir, Yasin; Simsek, Ulku Gulcihan; Seker, Ibrahim; Koseman, Abdurrahman; Gul, Burcu; Eroglu, Mehmet; Mutlu, Seda Iflazoglu
BackgroundIn ovo application is the process of administering some nutrients or components into the egg. The main purpose of this application is to ensure that some nutrients are provided to chicks with a short incubation period. Few studies were conducted with taurine in fertile eggs; especially, no observation of hatchability and chick quality has been found. In addition, taurine has an anti-stress impact that fights oxidative factors.ObjectiveTo assess the hatchability and chick quality after in ovo taurine administration. To determine the stress that may occur as a result of in ovo application and whether taurine has a stress-reducing effect.MethodsA total of 1200 fertile eggs from a 34-week-old broiler breeder (Ross 308) flock were categorized into 4 groups with 75 eggs per replicate: control (uninjected), taurine group (0.30 mL dissolved taurine in distilled water), sham control (sterile distilled water) and perforation (eggs perforated and then waxed). On day 14 of incubation, an in ovo injection was administered to the albumen. Data on hatching parameters and hepatic HSP70 levels were obtained using relevant formulas and western blotting, respectively.ResultsControl chicks exhibited higher hatchability than other groups, with the taurine group showing the lowest hatchability. The HSP70 levels were the highest in the perforation group compared to the control group. An increase of 21.37% in the taurine group and 83.45% in the sham control group was observed compared to the control group.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that in ovo application may induce increased stress, whereas taurine may have positive effects in mitigating the stress caused by in ovo application. In ovo application causes stress. In ovo taurine administration showed a stress reduction effect the stress caused by in ovo application. Control chicks exhibited higher hatchability. image

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of parentage verification in Arabian and Thoroughbred horses in Turki-ye using microsatellite markers. A total of 813 Arabian and 959 Thoroughbred horses were genotyped using a total of 17 microsatellite markers. The mean effective number of alleles was 3,34 and the mean number of alleles was 7,41 in Arabian horses. It was calculated that the mean He and Ho values in Arabian horses were 0,677 and 0,680, respective-ly. The mean effective number of alleles was 3,55 and the mean number of alleles was 6,59 in Thoroughbred horses. It was calculated that the mean Ho and He values in Thor-oughbred horses were 0,697 and 0,684, respectively. When the studied Arabian and Thoroughbred horse populations are considered as a single population, the mean FIT, FST and FIS values were found to be 0,063, 0,074 and, - 0,011, re-spectively. Also, 4 loci in Arabian horses and 3 loci in Thor-oughbred horses significantly deviated from HWE. The mean PIC value was 0,63 in Arabian horses and 0,64 in Thoroughbred horses. As a result; the microsatellites includ-ing the most informative 15 and 9 loci had a total value of > 0,9999 (11 and 7 loci > 0,999) in each population for PE - 1 and PE - 3, respectively. It has been concluded that parentage verification and genetic identification can be made successfully in the Arabian and Thoroughbred horse populations by using the microsatellite markers panel.

The effect of duration of ownership and time spent together during the day on cat owners' level of understanding of cats' body language
(Univ Zulia, Facultad Ciencias Veterinarias, 2024) Koseman, Abdurrahman; Seker, Ibrahim; Erez, Abdulsamed; Kosan, Senol
The study was conducted to determine the effect of the duration of ownership of cats ( Felis catus) ) and the time spent by the owners with their cats during the day on understanding the body language of cats. Face-to-face survey data from 194 cat owners were used in the study. In the study, the ratios of females who spent 1-5 hours (h), 6-10 h and 11 h or more with their cats was 49.6, 69.4 and 62.5%, respectively; 41.9, 59.2 and 56.2%, respectively; 48.8, 55.1 and 50.0%, respectively; and 45.0, 55.1 and 43.7%, respectively, of those aged 20 years and younger. In this study, it was determined that cat owners understood 6 of the 20 images of cat body language with 55.2% or more accuracy and 14 of them with 42.8% or less accuracy. In the study, it was determined that those who understood cat body language at the highest rate were female, associate degree and bachelor's degree graduates, 21-40 years old, and those who spent 1-5 h a day with their cats. As a result, it was determined that it is not sufficient for cat owners to understand their cats' body language correctly only if they have owned their cats for a long time and spend long periods of time together during the day. This is due to the fact that there are many factors affecting the behavior of cats and individual differences. It is recommended that cat owners learn cat body language to better understand their cats.
