From Intentions to Sustainable Actions: Behavioral Drivers of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Agriculture
(Wiley, 2025) Ganiyusufoglu, Ali; Bayramoglu, Zeki; Mirza, Emel; Dogan, Hasan Gokhan; Edirneligil, Aysen; Candemir, Serhan
In the face of climate-related challenges in agricultural production, understanding farmers' decision processes regarding adaptation and mitigation strategies has become increasingly critical. There are numerous papers examining these behaviors across diverse geographic regions and socioeconomic contexts. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the adaptation and mitigation behaviors of farmers in T & uuml;rkiye. Therefore, this paper focuses on Konya-a major agricultural center in T & uuml;rkiye-and collects data from farmers in the region through a questionnaire survey. The research aims to explain their behaviors concerning climate change through the lens of different behavioral theories-specifically, theory of planned behavior (TPB), extended TPB by personal norms, and values-identity-personal norm (VIP) theory in a comparative manner. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is employed to quantitatively analyze key psychological, moral, and identity-driven determinants of pro-environmental behaviors. Findings confirm the explanatory power of TPB constructs while personal norms emerge as critical drivers of mitigation behaviors with the extended TPB model. The VIP model further expands the analysis by integrating altruistic, egoistic, and biospheric values alongside environmental self-identity. This demonstrates that values and identity strongly influence personal norms and related behaviors. This paper not only fills a geographic gap by focusing on T & uuml;rkiye but also offers practical insights for designing policies and interventions that enhance the adaptive and mitigating capacities of behavioral frameworks from a comparative perspective. In practice, our findings suggest that sustainable development policies, publications, and rural development programs are most effective when they mitigate skill constraints through access to technology and timely training while simultaneously strengthening personal norms and environmental self-identity. Thus, the intention becomes sustainable adaptation and mitigation.

The analysis of producers' technology investment intentions within the framework of extended theory of planned behavior
(Elsevier, 2025) Mirza, Emel; Bayramoglu, Zeki; Dogan, Hasan Gokhan; Candemir, Serhan; Ganiyusufoglu, Ali; Edirneligil, Aysen
This study is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and expands this main framework by including the constructs of education, knowledge acquisition and access to financial resources. In this study conducted on 270 farmers in Konya -an important agricultural region of Turkey-, a stratified sampling design was employed with a survey instrument adapted from previously validated measurements. Robust reliability and validity were confirmed for constructs related to attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, knowledge acquisition and access to financial resources through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling approach. The results obtained show that attitude, subjective norms and knowledge acquisition significantly increase the perceived behavioral control of farmers. On the other hand, there is an indirect relationship between perceived behavioral control and technology investment intention through the access to finance, which indicates that access to financial resources emerges as a pivotal factor determining technological investment intentions. These results imply that it is important to improve the farmers' financial capacity and information support to promote technology adoption. In this context, policy makers and agencies working in the field of agricultural development need to spearhead the process of the financial barriers and knowledge resources, by first selecting credit facilities, providing government subsidies and later knowledge transfer.

Toward Sustainable Input Pricing in Agriculture: The Sectoral Impact of Asymmetric Monetary Policy in Türkiye
(Wiley, 2026) Dogan, Hasan Gokhan; Mirza, Emel; Ganiyusufoglu, Ali; Bayramoglu, Zeki; Candemir, Serhan; Edirneligil, Aysen
This study investigates the asymmetric effects of monetary policy instruments on agricultural input prices in T & uuml;rkiye, a developing economy. Using monthly data from 2015 to 2024, the analysis focuses on key variables including the exchange rate, consumer price index (CPI), policy rate, reserve requirement ratio, and rediscount rate. Asymmetric fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and impulse-response analyses reveal that positive exchange rate shocks significantly and persistently increase input costs, highlighting the sector's import dependence and vulnerability. Inflation and policy rate hikes also raise costs, but declines in these variables do not produce equally strong reductions-indicating asymmetric effects. Similar patterns are observed for other monetary tools. The findings emphasize that both the direction and magnitude of macroeconomic shocks matter for agricultural input pricing. Therefore, monetary policy must account for sector-specific sensitivities and transmission mechanisms. In critical sectors like agriculture, tailored policy designs are essential for stabilizing costs, supporting food security, and enhancing rural economic resilience.

Water Saving Behaviors in Agriculture within the Framework of Norm Activation Model
(Springer, 2026) Candemir, Serhan; Dogan, Hasan Gokhan; Edirneligil, Aysen; Bayramoglu, Zeki; Mirza, Emel; Ganiyusufoglu, Ali
Today, sustainable water use has become a critical policy area, as dynamics such as increasing global water demand, water scarcity, and climate change directly affect agricultural production. In this study, the role of psychological and social factors in explaining water-saving behaviors in agricultural production was examined based on the Norm Activation Model (NAM); the model was extended with the environmental concern (EC) variable. Within the scope of the field study carried out in Konya province, data were collected from 270 farmers. Structural equation modeling results showed that personal norms exert a strong positive effect on water-saving behaviors (beta = 0.430 in the original model; beta = 0.341 in the extended model). The original NAM explained 19.5% of the variance in personal norms, while the extended NAM increased this explanatory power to 22.0%, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 2.5 percentage points. Environmental concern directly affected both personal norms (beta = 0.118) and water-saving behaviors (beta = 0.234). Guilt emotions contributed positively to water-saving behaviors (beta = 0.085), while pride did not show a statistically significant direct effect. The findings indicate that psychological and environmental drivers play a decisive role in shaping farmers' water-saving behaviors. The study suggests that environmental sensitivity and normative approaches should be integrated into interventions aimed at increasing the sustainability of water management policies and agricultural irrigation practices
