Alexithymia and Forgiveness Levels of Forensic Psychiatric Patients
(Slack Inc, 2024) Polat, Hatice; Karakas, Sibel Asi; Ercel, Seyda; Tasci, Gulay
The current cross-sectional study was performed to examine levels of alexithymia and forgiveness in forensic psychiatric patients. Data were collected between March 2022 and August 2022 at a high-security forensic psychiatric hospital affili-ated with a city hospital in Turkey. A personal information form prepared by the researchers, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Heartland Forgiveness Scale were used to obtain data. Participants comprised 132 forensic psychiatric patients who agreed to participate in the study. A significant negative correlation was found between alexithymia and forgiveness levels of participants (p < 0.01, r= -0.259). In other words, as alexithymia levels increased, participants were found to be less forgiving. In addition, results suggest that forensic psychiatric patients are suscep-tible to alexithymia and higher levels of forgiveness. Determining forgiveness and alexithymia levels of forensic psychiatric patients will contribute to the structuring of care to be offered to these patients. Investigating social media addiction and impact of social media addiction, loneliness, depression, life satisfaction and problem-solving skills on academic self-efficacy and academic success among university students
(Frontiers Media Sa, 2024) Aslan, Imran; Polat, Hatice
Introduction: The negative effects of post-COVID-19 restrictions have been detected in students' mental well-being due to internet addiction, changing habits, despair and uncertainty. Students' academic success is expected to be affected by social media addiction, loneliness, depression, life satisfaction, problem solving skills and academic self-efficacy factors. This study aimed to determine the level of social media addiction and the effects of these factors on the academic success of university students and define their interactions with each other. Methods: Four hundred nineteen questionnaires were collected between October-December 2022 at Bingol University, Turkiye. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-Way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze data with the help of the SPSS 22 software. Results: Middle level grade (GPA) average (71,17 +/- 9,69 out of 100), low level social support from friends and family members (34,6%), spending more than 4 h on social media (42,5%), middle level social media addiction, moderate depression level (51,31%-PHQ > 10), mild loneliness and slight dissatisfaction with life were found among students. Furthermore, high academic self-efficacy, moderate agreement with academic performance and good problem-solving skills were indicated in the survey results. Significant differences, such as higher life satisfaction among males and higher depression among females, were measured. Academic self-efficacy scale, problem solving skills and satisfaction with life had a negative correlation with social media addiction and depression, while a positive correlation with academic performance measures. Problem solving skills, satisfaction with life, fourth class vs. others and living alone vs. others were positive predictors of the academic self-efficacy. Meanwhile, loneliness was a negative predictor of the academic self-efficacy, while higher problem-solving skills and being female were positive factors leading to a higher GPA. Discussion: The fact that the participants were only students from Bingol University limits the ability to generalize the results. Policymakers could implement social and problem-solving skills training to develop better academic programs and cognitive-behavioral therapy for students' academic success.

Investigation of Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter, Intraocular Pressure, and Dry Eye in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder: The Role of Childhood Trauma
(Mdpi, 2025) Sun, Tunahan; Cakar, Demet Dursun; Yesiloglu, Caner; Demirkol, Mehmet Emin; Tamam, Lut; Ugur, Kerim; Polat, Hatice
Background/Objectives: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by emotional instability, impulsive behavior, and impaired interpersonal relationships. It is associated with a high prevalence of childhood trauma and neurobiological changes. This study aimed to compare ophthalmologic parameters, namely, optic nerve sheath diameter, intraocular pressure, and dry eye, in patients with BPD with healthy controls and to investigate the relations between these parameters and childhood trauma. Methods: This study included 51 female patients with BPD between the ages of 18 and 35 years, who were not using psychotropic medication, and 51 healthy controls matched for age and educational level. Optic nerve sheath diameter, intraocular pressure, and tear break-up time were measured, and trauma history was evaluated using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form. Independent t-test and Pearson correlation analysis were used in statistical analyses. Results: Patients with BPD were found to have significantly higher mean optic nerve sheath diameter scores (left: 3.94 +/- 0.43, right: 3.97 +/- 0.47) compared with healthy controls (left: 3.76 +/- 0.44, right: 3.78 +/- 0.45) (p < 0.05). The groups showed no significant difference in intraocular pressure and dry eye parameters (p > 0.05). A significant positive correlation was noted between emotional abuse scores and the optic nerve sheath diameter of the left eye in patients with BPD (p < 0.05; r = 0.364). Conclusions: An increased optic nerve sheath diameter may be a potential peripheral biomarker reflecting chronic stress or changes in intracranial physiology in patients with BPD. This increase is particularly associated with a history of emotional abuse. Ophthalmological parameters may contribute to understanding the neurobiological basis of BPD and serve as peripheral biomarkers or indicators of neurobiological changes.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Family Accommodation, Alexithymia, and Emotional Regulation Difficulty in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
(Korean Neuropsychiatric Assoc, 2025) Kartal, Fatma; Polat, Hatice; Kurt, Aydin
Objective The aim of the study is to explore the relationship between family accommodation, emotion regulation difficulties, and alexithymia in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods The study group consisted of 107 individuals diagnosed with OCD, while the control group included 151 healthy individuals. Sociodemographic data form, Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS), Family Accommodation Scale-Patient Version (FAS-PV), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) were used to collect data. Results In our study, it was found that the median DERS and TAS scores of the participants were significantly higher in the OCD group than in the control group. A moderate positive correlation was found between FAS-PV and the total score of YBOCS (p=0.002, r=0.302). Statistically significant, low to moderate, positive correlations were observed between FAS-PV and the total score of DERS (p=0.001, r=0.319). Furthermore, a statistically significant, moderate to low correlation was found between YBOCS and the total score of DERS. A positive and substantial influence on FAS-PV is provided by the YBOCS variable (B=0.571, p=0.01). Conclusion In conclusion, this study found that difficulty in emotion regulation and alexithymia levels were higher in individuals with OCD compared to healthy controls, and that family accommodation was related to both difficulties in emotion regulation and alexithymia. Finally, it was determined that difficulty in emotion regulation has a mediating effect in the relationship between family accommodation and alexithymia. It is suggested that longitudinal studies be conducted to further support the data presented by this study. Psychiatry Investig 2025;22(12):1368-1378

The Effect of Alexithymia, Metacognitive Beliefs and Self-Efficacy on Disability in Patients With Schizophrenia: A Cross-Sectional Study
(Wiley, 2026) Polat, Hatice; Ugur, Kerim; Sun, Tunahan
Introduction Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with greater levels of disability being associated with lower general self-efficacy. Reducing disability and enhancing self-sufficiency in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are among the primary goals of treatment and care. Aim This study aimed to examine the effects of alexithymia and metacognitive beliefs on self-efficacy levels and disability in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Methods The study was conducted with 145 individuals under the age of 30 (67 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and 78 healthy controls) using a descriptive and correlational design. Data were collected using a sociodemographic data form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Metacognition Questionnaire (MCQ-30), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0). Results Compared to the control group, the patient group demonstrated significantly higher TAS-20, MCQ-30 and WHODAS 2.0 scores, and significantly lower GSES scores (p < 0.05). The patients' total MCQ-30 scores were significantly associated with both WHODAS 2.0 and GSES scores (p < 0.05); however, TAS-20 did not mediate the relationship between MCQ-30 and WHODAS 2.0 (p > 0.05), whereas it showed a significant mediating effect in the relationship between MCQ-30 and GSES (p < 0.05). Discussion Patients exhibited higher disability and lower general self-efficacy than the control group. Cognitive-behavioural and metacognitive therapeutic approaches targeting alexithymia may contribute to improved functioning and reduced disability in individuals with schizophrenia. Implications for Practice The findings improve understanding of factors related to disability and diminished general self-efficacy in individuals with schizophrenia and may inform the development of targeted psychosocial interventions. Relevance Statement Self-efficacy and disability are key determinants of recovery in schizophrenia. By demonstrating the roles of alexithymia and metacognitive beliefs, this study provides a conceptual framework to guide clinical practice and supportive care strategies.

The effect of cyberchondria on anxiety and surgical fear levels in surgical oncology patients
(Springer, 2025) Polat, Hatice; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Kartal, Mert
This study was conducted to examine the relationship between cyberchondria, surgical fear and anxiety in patients undergoing oncological surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with 163 patients in the general surgery clinics of a university hospital in T & uuml;rkiye between January and December 2023. The study revealed that mean total scores of cyberchondria, surgical fear and anxiety scales were moderate with values of 39.87 +/- 12.66, 45.84 +/- 19.80, and 28.83 +/- 11.76, respectively. A moderately significant positive correlation was observed between cyberchondria and surgical fear and anxiety levels (r:0.688, and r:0.684; p = 0.000, respectively), while a strongly significant positive relationship was found between surgical fear and anxiety levels (r: 0.759, p = 0.000). The results also demonstrated that 47% of patients' fear of surgery could be attributed to the independent variable of cyberchondria (R2: 0.470). The results demonstrated that 46% of the variance in anxiety levels could be attributed to the cyberchondria independent variable (R2: 0.468). The pervasive use of the internet has given rise to a growing tendency among individuals to seek disease-related information online. The study found that the patients exhibited moderate levels of cyberchondria, with an increase in the tendency corresponding to an increase in surgical fear and anxiety. It is recommended that healthcare professionals share detailed information with patients in a way that does not encourage them to engage in excessive online medical research and allocate sufficient time to patients to alleviate their surgical anxiety and fear.

(Kare Publ, 2026) Bugday, Muhammet Serdar; Akdemir, Ender; Ugur, Kerim; Cakmak, Battal Selcuk; Akbulut, Mehmet Levent; Polat, Hatice
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Turkiye on anxiety and depression levels and their impact on erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS: A total of 164 men aged 25-55 were enrolled between July 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025. Ninety-seven patients who presented with ED after the earthquakes were included as the study group, and 67 healthy individuals without ED were enrolled as controls. All participants completed the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHO-QOL-BREF), and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). Statistical analyses were conducted using chi-square, t-tests, and ANOVA. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the groups regarding age and marital status. Patients with ED had significantly higher ASEX, HAM-A, and HAM-D scores and significantly lower WHOQOL-BREF scores compared to controls (p=0.001). Among ED patients, 52 (53.6%) had severe ED, 40 (41.2%) had moderate, and 5 (5.2%) had mild symptoms. ASEX scores were significantly higher (p=0.01), and WHOQOL-BREF general health scores were significantly lower in patients with severe ED compared to those with milder forms (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: The February 6 earthquakes were associated with increased anxiety and depression and decreased quality of life in men, which significantly contributed to the prevalence and severity of ED. These findings highlight the importance of addressing sexual health as part of post-disaster psychosocial support.
