| dc.description.abstract | Musculoskeletal system pain frequency increases with the aging population. Taking a detailed history and physical examination are the most important things for a correct diagnosis. Imaging should be considered as a tool to confirm the diagnosis. A number of imaging modalities are used to evaluate musculoskeletal system diseases. Despite the emergence of new imaging techniques for the assessment of musculoskeletal system pain, conventional radiology remains the cornerstone of diagnostic imaging. Radiography is the most advantageous and cheapest method in evaluating bone abnormalities such as fractures, dislocations, and osteoarthritis. Computed tomography can provide high-resolution, two- and three-dimensional images. Nuclear medicine applications are used in investigating stress fractures, occult fractures, bone tumors, or infections. Magnetic resonance imaging is used to evaluate soft tissue disorders, including ligaments, tendons, cartilage tissue, and masses. Ultrasonography is effective in evaluating effusions, cysts, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Vascularization can also be identified with the use of Doppler. There is also the possibility to perform aspirations and injections under ultrasonography guidance. It is important to choose the most appropriate imaging method to accelerate the diagnosis and treatment. The imaging method to be preferred also changes depending on the structure of each joint and region investigated and the characteristics of the diseases considered in the differential diagnosis. © 2022 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. | |
