Özet

Cranial trauma can cause traumatic brain injury (TBI), which is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the world. TBI can develop with both primary and secondary injuries. Primary injuries can include contusions, hematomas, and diffuse axonal injuries, which can be either intra-axial or extra-axial lesions such as epidural-subdural hematomas, and subarachnoid hemorrhages. Cerebral edema, ischemia, herniation, hydrocephalus, and encephalomalacia are secondary injuries. In TBI, clinically determined according to the Glasgow Coma Scale, imaging techniques have an important role in identifying existing injury findings and complications. Today, computed tomography is the main method used for imaging cranial trauma. It is known that magnetic resonance imaging is highly sensitive to pathological changes associated with mild TBI and is useful in assessing the severity and prognosis of the injury. In recent years, studies have also been conducted on the use of functional imaging techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging, perfusion imaging, and spectroscopy, as well as molecular imaging methods in TBI. It is important for radiologists and clinicians, who have a critical role in the diagnosis of brain injury and related complications resulting from cranial trauma, to make the correct decisions about the preferred modalities for imaging both primary and secondary injuries. © 2025 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
