The Relationship Between Postoperative Spiritual Well-Being and Sleep Quality and Comfort in Patients Undergoing Lung Cancer Surgery in Türkiye

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between postoperative spiritual well-being and sleep quality and comfort in patients with lung cancer. This descriptive, relationship-seeking study was carried out at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic of a university hospital in T & uuml;rkiye between February 1 and July 31, 2023. The sample consisted of 252 patients who had undergone lung cancer surgery and were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, General Sleep Quality Scale, Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and General Comfort Scale. In statistical analysis, number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test in independent groups, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests. The Pearson correlation test was used to determine relationships between scale score averages (p < 0.05). The patients ' mean spiritual well-being score was 119.15 +/- 12.35, their mean sleep quality score was 42.97 +/- 19.73, and their mean general comfort score was 2.58 +/- 0.40. While a low positive relationship was found between spiritual well-being and sleep quality (r = 0.217, p = 0.01), no relationship was found with comfort (r = -0.110, p = 0.88). Patients exhibited high levels of spiritual well-being, reasonable comfort, and moderate sleep quality. Higher spiritual well-being was associated with better sleep quality, while no significant association was observed between spiritual well-being and comfort. These findings underscore the importance of integrating interventions that support spiritual well-being to achieve improved sleep outcomes in patients.
